AN exciting learning and leadership programme for youngsters took place in Okehampton last week.

Around 30 youngsters from across the South West region took part in the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, co-ordinated by Okehampton Rotary's Allenton Fisher and based at the YHA Bracken Tor centre near Okehampton Station.

The youngsters, all aged 16 to 18, were put into small teams and took part in a varied programme of outdoor pursuit activities, learning about teamwork and co-operative problem-solving. Rotary clubs from across the area each put forward participants, and sponsored them to take part.

On the final day of the programme, the group were visited by Central Devon MP Mel Stride, who presented each participant with a certificate recognising their efforts.

Mr Stride said: 'Today the eyes of the world may be on London, but the eyes of Devon are on us. What these young people have achieved taking part in this award is really impressive.

'So often you read negative stories about young people in the press, so it is great to see such an overwhelmingly positive programme here today.

'As parents and most people will know, the vast majority of young people are decent and hard working, and this group exemplifies that. I salute them for what they have done here on this course.'

The new president of Okehampton Rotary Nils Westman said: 'This course reminds me of a similar trip I did many years ago. When I was 16, I spent two weeks with the Swedish Army on the Arctic tundra. In many ways it was strangely similar to Dartmoor and its terrain.

'I remember it was a good experience, but it was not structured in the same way this course has been. It builds confidence, team-building and a whole range of skills.

'I think these youngsters will have gained far more than just a buzz. It also makes me wish I was 16 again.'
