FREE football sessions for children in Okehampton have been an overwhelming success with almost 100 children turning up on each occasion.

This is the first time Exeter City Football Club has held the free coaching sessions to get youngsters interested in football and they are set to be repeated in the summer.

The sessions are being followed with a five-week block of coaching, which started on Tuesday and the cost is £5.

Exeter City coaches will then return for a three-day Football in the Community course in the summer holidays.

Community officer for the club Jamie Vittles said he was massively impressed by the turnout of children over the two weeks, who ranged from just five years old to 14.

'Our aim is to get children out playing football and it is then up to them if they choose to go on the coaching courses, he said. 'Okehampton has always had a good association with Exeter City and we are helping to provide young people with something to do.'

He said Football in the Community schemes were also a way of spotting young talent: 'We see a lot of children and the promising ones have a chance of going onto our Centre of Excellence. It's the first door into the club.'
