A CHRISTMAS Day lunch and party held at Tavistock's United Reformed Church was deemed a great success with 64 people sitting for a traditional turkey meal followed by Christmas pudding.

The Rev Roger Cornish said: 'It was a very happy occasion and all went smoothly thanks to the many people, drawn from all walks of life, who contributed in so many ways. We had so many volunteers offering help this year that we reluctantly had to turn some away.

'In addition to those who gave up their Christmas Eve and Christmas Day to prepare, cook, serve or transport, there were many other individuals and local businesses who contributed financially or in kind.

'These included J and S Downing, Edinburgh Woollen Mill, W M Morrison Supermarket, Tavistock Area Support Services, Tavistock Lions Club and Tavistock Strollers.

'A magnificent gift of £709.45 was received from Morwell House Christmas carol concert. Thank you all.'
