DAVID Shepherd was the guest speaker at Lewdown Cricket Club?s centenary sportsman?s evening, held at Jethro?s Nightclub. A total of 175 guests attended, including many former players from the 60s and 70s. Cricket clubs represented included Callington, Calstock, South Petherwin, Chagford, Werrington, Ordulph Taverners, Tavistock, Tamar Cavaliers, Holsworthy and Lifton. MC Steve Batstone kept the evening going with quizzes, a draw and an auction. David Shepherd spoke of his playing years with Gloucestershire and his life as a Test Match umpire. He umpired his last test match, England versus Australia at the Oval in 2005. One of Jethro?s favourite entertainers, Mike Gold then took the stage. Jethro finished the evening by congratulating Lewdown CC for all they had achieved in the past ten years. A donation from the evening will be made to the special needs unit at St Stephen?s Primary School, Launceston. Celebrations continue with a cricket carnival for all ages on Monday August 28. On Friday September 22 the club will be playing at Lord?s in a centenary celebration match ? it promises to be a very special day. Three Lewdown players will walk from Lewdown to Lord?s to raise money for charity. Club presentations and luncheon take place on Sunday October 1 at Eagle House, Launceston.
