THE finals of the Tavistock Club Tennis Tournament, organised by Max Goodison were played in the Meadows on Saturday.

The men's singles was won by Luke Wakley who beat Simon Prout 6-4, 6-2 while the ladies singles saw Amanda Goodison win 6-2, 6-0, against Alison West.

In the men's doubles Ron Skinner and Luke Wakley won the first set 6-0 however Phil Harbottle and John Stewart, won the next two 6-4, 7-5 to claim the victory. In the ladies doubles Amanda Goodison and Wendy George won 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 against Alison West and Maggie Sherras.

David Isaac, the club president presented the cups to the winners, praising the sportsmanship of all the participants.

Tavistock has a number of young and talented players, Sarah Lucas, Luke Wakley and George Newman who made a welcome return to the club and Peter Bradley who won the junior competition.

Results in the ninth round of tennis in the Plymouth and District League: Division one: Men's A (Linden Hardisty and Josh Brown, Luke Wakley and Simon Prout) v Mannamead A (home), won 8-0, 71pts.

Division two: Men's B (Phil Harbottle and Gareth George, Owen Drage and Tony Du'Gay) v Liskeard (home), lost 4-5, 36pts.

Division three: Men's C (Matt Smith and Ron Skinner, Bernard Mowle and Charles Snow) v Tavistock D (away), won 8-1; Men's D (Bill Sparks and Pete Rodgers, Paul Newton and Jeremy Hyde) v Tavistock C (home), lost 1-8, 30pts.

Division seven: Men's F (Steve Fletcher and John Mulley, John Medland and Rick Read) v Hill Lane D (home), lost 3-6, 54pts.

Division one: Ladies A (Sarah Lucas and Alice Anstey, Amanda Goodison and Hilary Picton) v Mannamead A (away), won 6-3, 31pts.

Division three: Ladies B (Alison West and Roma McMahon, Olga Rogers and Julia McClenaghan) v Ivybridge D (home), won 8-1, 43pts.

Rescheduled match (Roma McMahon and Alison West, Trish Mowle and Olga Rogers) v Plymstock (home), lost 4-5. Division five: Ladies C (Wendy George and Josie Gerhold, Kathy Byrne and Pamela Riley) v Devonshire C (away), lost 7-2, 33pts.

Juniors: The Junior U18 boys and girls competitions have been completed. Amber Massey beat Aisling Massey 6-4, 4-6 (10-5); Peter Bradley beat Benny Evans 6-3 6-4. More than 30 competitors took part.
