THE Plymouth District league season started on a high for the Yelverton Ladies? tennis teams, with two wins and a draw in the first week?s matches. The A team, Helen Smith, Karen Gasche, Fiona Spreadbury and Julie Whetton, drew 5-5 with Russell Avenue after losing a vital tie-break. The B team Angie Lynch, Shirley Every, Wendy Sharland and Jenny Kay had a very good away win 5-4 against Devonshire B and the C team, Joy Tynan, Lyn Jones, Mary Downey and Mags Benny beat Hill Lane away 7-2. In week two the same B team had another convincing win against the Devonshire C team 7-2. The C team lost 3-6 to Ivybridge E. Joy Tynan and Di Mayne picked up the three points and could have had 4 if they had won a tie-break, having suffered a heavy 0-8 defeat by Ivybridge B in week one. Yelverton men?s A team reversed the result against Whiteford Road in week two by winning 8-0. Team players were Phil Gasche, Terry Leonard, Charles Hattersley, Roger Froud and Rob Kamara. The B team won 8-2 against Ivybridge E and drew with rivals Tavistock E 4-4. Greg Amann made his debut for the B team. Other players for the B team were David Williams, Mike Gilbert, John Marshall, Terry Leonard, Charles Hattersley and Anthony Watts. The annual club tournament is now under way and one of the first matches to be played was a ladies? doubles between Joy Tynan/Clare Taylor and Wendy Sharland/Mary Downey. Joy and Clare won the third set 9-7.
