OKEHAMPTON ladies' A tennis team required only a handful of points from their final two home fixtures to secure their position in division two of the Exeter Tennis League.
But this was no foregone conclusion as they faced tough opposition in Exeter Golf and Country Club and the league winners Sidford.
In the first match against Exeter, Jackie Jarvis and Beth Carter supplied two valuable points by beating one of the Exeter pairs in a close three-set match. Angela Herrod-Taylor and Becca Jarvis lost out to the same pair in two tight sets. Neither Okehampton pair could overturn Exeter's number one couple.
With their place in division II next season almost secure, Okehampton played host to Sidford. Again Jackie Jarvis and Beth Carter beat the visiting side's second pair, this time comfortably in straight sets, but could not repeat the feat against the away side's first pair.
Angela Herrod-Taylor and Hannah Packer, playing together for only the second time this season found some good form but were unable to take any points from a strong Sidford side.
Okehampton did do enough to ensure that they will be playing division II tennis again next year, finishing 15 points ahead of the relegation zone.
