MORE than 100 children from 12 primary schools in the Tavistock area took part in a special event at the town?s tennis club last Wednesday, aimed at boosting their sporting skills.

The Top Link festival was one of many taking place throughout the country and was organised by Emma Sim, Sarah Guy, Tom Campbell, Kate Evans and Tom Honey, all year 10 students at Tavistock College.

They were helped in their management of the day by school sports co-ordinator Tric Locker and Linden Hardisty, Tavistock Tennis Club coach.

Despite appalling weather conditions on the day, all the children enjoyed the event and not one complained about the cold and rain!

Tric said: ?The aim was to get as many children involved as possible, so it was pretty hectic ? there were so many balls flying about it was unbelieveable!

?It went very well though ? and the students organising it were brilliant.?

To fit in with the Olympic theme of the year, the schools played as countries of the world and competed for bronze, silver and gold medals, which were kindly donated by the HSBC bank in Tavistock.

Tennis club president Norma Woodcock presented the perpetual trophy and medals to the winning schools and congratulated everyone involved in their enthusiasm.

The overall winners were Tavistock Primary School, with Whitchurch School coming second and Mary Tavy and Brentor third.
