TAVISTOCK Tennis Club started its Plymouth and District League Competition programme last week.
Four men?s teams have been entered in divisions 1, 2, 4 and 6; in the ladies? three teams in divisions 2, 3 and 5. There are three juniors (18 years and under) teams; in divisions 1, 2 and 3.
Other competitions entered are the Plymouth Knockout Cup (seniors mixed doubles) and the Handicap Bowl (seniors).
Results for week 1 of the league are: due to the weather Plympton A had to forfeit a match to the club.
Seniors: Men A team in div 1 lost 0-8 away against Mannamead A who fielded a strong team with some good players new in the league. Tavistock team: Simon Thomas/Bernard Mowle and Ray Hinton/Sean Jefferson.
B team in div 2 lost 3-7 at home against St Mellion A. Owen Locker/Phil Harbottle v their 1st pair; 6-1, 2-6, 6-3: v 2nd pair; 6-1, 3-6, 2-6. Josh Sutton/Richard Read v their 1st pair; 1-6, 2-6: v 2nd pair 2-6, 2-6.
C team in div 4 v Plympton A at home. W/O 8-0 to Tavistock as opposition unable to field a team.
D team in div 6 lost 0-8 at home against East Cornwall A. David Martin/Steve Fletcher v their 1st pair; 2-6, 3-6: v 2nd pair; 4-6, 3-6. Bill Sparks/ David Isaac v their 1st pair 1-6, 1-6: v 2nd pair; 4-6, 3-6.
Ladies? A team in div 2 won 5-4 at home against Mannamead B. Tric Locker/Tori Cunnigham v their 1st pair; 6-2, 6-1: v 2nd pair; 6-3, 6-1. Sue Hughes/Sara Whyman v their 1st pair; 5-7, 6-7: v 2nd pair; 3-6, 6-1, 4-6.
The juniors? 1st team in div 1 won 43-41 away against Torpoint. Russell Rice v their 1st player; 7-6, 6-2. Ashley Rice and James Martin v their 1st pair; 5-7, 6-2. Ashley Rice v their 2nd player; 5-7, 3-6. Russell and James v their 2nd pair; 7-5, 4-6.
The importance of winning as many games as possible is demonstrated with this match as the actual score was 43-41 but as winners, the Club received five bonus points.
Two club mixed doubles tournaments have been held. The winter event held early in the year was won by Annie and Mike Jefferies and the official opening season event won by Anne Bruce/Phil Harbottle on April 12 which was followed by an enjoyable skittles evening at the Chip Shop Inn, Lamerton.
Three recent friendly matches have been played. Won 5-3 at home against Okehampton: Team Babette/John Jackson and Clare Heard/Damian Heard (in their 1st match for the club). Won 7-3 at home against Callington which included one set each men?s and ladies? doubles. Team: Gaynor Pollard/John Burgess and Josie Gerhold/Keith Samways (playing in his first match for the club). Won 4-2 (sets played restricted due to minor injury) away against Crediton. Team: Annie/Mike Jefferies and Jenny/Rick Read.
