A GROUP of 16-year-olds from Tavistock recently took part in a pilot scheme aimed to bridge the gap between secondary school and adult life by broadening horizons.

Devon County Council in conjunction with Tavistock's Alexander Centre and the Dartmoor Centres provided one of the 32 National Pilot Schemes as part of the Department of Education and Employment Summer Activity Programmes initiated by David Blunkett earlier this year.

The pilot provided a structural and challenging programme based upon adventure activities backed up by quality advice and support. The participants were given exclusively designed T-shirts and a CD with photographs taken over the two-week activity programme.

It is intended that the pilot — known as The Challenge Project — for the 13 young people will be significantly expanded next year to involve more youngsters and a wider range of Devon County Council schools and community colleges.

Information on future outdoor education courses can be obtained from John Collacott, Youth and Community Tutor, The Alexander Centre, Plymouth Road, Tavistock. (01822 61352).
