THE 47th Ten Tors Challenge will take place this weekend — with a particular emphasis on teamwork and respect for the dangers of Dartmoor, in the wake of the recent tragedy on the moor. The Exeter-based 43 (Wessex) Brigade will again be the main organisers of the event. Brigadier Jackson of the brigade said that at this year's event he wants 'teamwork' to be a particular emphasis, and is especially keen that participants should 'experience and respect Dartmoor.' The Brigadier appealed to this year's entrants: 'please don't take risks either with your own safety or that of others. There is no disgrace in seeking help.' A total of 2,400 participants in 400 teams will take part in this year's Ten Tors, setting out from Okehampton Camp at 7am on Saturday to complete treks of 35, 45 or 55 miles, according to age. At 7.30am on Saturday around 270 less able youngsters will also set out on the now well-established Jubilee Challenge of 15 miles — many in wheelchairs and each accompanied by an Officer Cadet from Exeter University. A total of almost 700 personnel will help to police the 2007 event, including members of the Royal Navy, RAF and Dartmoor Rescue Group, as well as the army who will this year be using two Sea King and two Gazelle helicopters. Dartmoor National Park Authority has stated that its aim this year will be to 'tackle the misconception of the event being a race or a purely physical experience.' It is aiming to decrease the environmental impact of the race by increasing awareness of nesting birds and discouraging littering and damage to dry stone walls.
