WHITCHURCH Wayfarers on Sunday host Tavistock in the inaugural John Jackson memorial match. John was a loyal player and friend at both clubs who sadly died after a long illness just before the season started. He played at Tavistock for many years before switching his allegiance to Whitchurch about five years ago. Neil Tamblin, a vice chairman of the Wayfarers, said: ?The match starts at 2.30pm and the Whitchurch Wayfarers welcome anyone who would like to see this match played in the spirit in which John believed the game should be played. ?The bar will be open all day and there will be a barbecue in the evening ? weather permitting.? Whitchurch progressed into the semi final of the West Devon cup for the first time in many years. Playing at home against Belstone, the visitors batted first, but struggled to get any momentum against the tight bowling of Frost and Churchill. With 10 overs to go, Belstone only had 35 on the board. The long handle came out, but Newton, Tamblin and Daymond kept things in check, taking regular wickets and restricting Belstone to 121 over their allocated overs. In reply, Whitchurch were soon on top. Newton and Barriball played some extravagant strokes, until Newton holed out for 39. Barriball completed his deserved half century and in partnership with Witcher took his side to victory by nine wickets with five overs to spare. In the semi final, Whitchurch await the winners of Elephants Nest and Hatherleigh. Whitchurch will be hoping to use this victory as a platform for their Devon league form.
