DARTMOOR Prison in Princetown will play host to a jailbreak in April when people from all over the country take part in a challenge to raise money for children with cerebral palsy.

Teams of two or more have been challenged to go 'on the run' from Dartmoor Prison wearing prison gear or other disguises on Saturday, April 18 to raise money for the Vranch House school in Exeter for children with cerebral palsy and physical difficulties.

The teams are released from near the prison with between 12 and 96 hours or 168 hours to get as far away as they can. They must not pay for transport and must keep within the law. The escape route may be pre-arranged, free tickets may be obtained or others can pay for or lend transport. Minimum age is 16.

Those who break old and create new records of their choice with their performance will win a place in the Jailbreak Book of Records.

This is the 26th Dartmoor Jailbreak since 1984 and so far a total of £589,973 has been raised.

Organiser Sue Gould said: 'The furthest distance reached is New Zealand by two grannies, the most countries reached in four days is 22 by the Torbay Police and the furthest run is two marathons in two days by 29 Commando Royal Artillery.

'The shortest distance reached is the Prince of Wales in Princetown — so teams don't always have to go to great lengths!'

Funds from the jailbreak help run the school and centre and buy equipment such as walking and communication aids for children. Teams can also split the funds raised 50/50 with a charity of their choice.
