WHITCHURCH recently ventured forth on their first tour in many years. Their first destination should have been Uplyme and Lyme Regis, but an overnight deluge meant the game was called off early Sunday morning, enabling the party of 12 players and two support crew to head straight for their base in Weymouth. Monday?s match was just up the road where Weymouth CC were the hosts. The home side batted first and made 211 for 6, principally scored by Jannaway (45), Armfield (35) and Ryall (57no). Wickets were taken by Heatley (2), Woodrow, Alford and two run outs, but the previous nights frivolities clearly hampered Whitchurch?s fielding as many catches went begging. Whitchurch made a spirited reply. Hodge ground out 59 anchoring the innings, whilst Gray (46), Chappell (44) and Witcher (26) blasted the ball around. Kenyan international Collins Oboyo bamboozled the tourists but was unable to make a breakthrough. Nine runs were required off the final over, but Whitchurch came up two short, as the final ball from Willesden (2 for 15) shot along the ground and cleaned out the stumps. On Tuesday, Whitchurch made the short trip to Bere Regis and played out another tightly fought match despite the weather being more November than July. Whitchurch batted first and reversed the order from the previous day. Sambells blasted a few quick boundaries, whilst Stokes assumed the ?Hodge? role and chugged away at one run per over. Heatley (32) and Stokes (29) had added 70 before their suicidal running finally caught up with them. Tamblin (36) and Woodrow (33) boosted Whitchurch?s total to 186 for 8. In reply, Bere Regis struggled against a tight spell from R Hall (2-34), G Hall and Witcher. At 90 for 5 with 10 overs to go, the home side appeared out of the game, but a belligerent 43 from J Walker and 61 from M Walker, kept the game interesting. Bere needed 20 off the final over, but when M Walker fell to Tamblin (2 for 41), the game was up. Wednesday, saw the journey home, but not before the final encounter took place at nearby Dorchester. The match started in light drizzle and continued for seven overs in a downpour before common sense prevailed and the match was abandoned, with Whitchurch on 26 for 0, principally extras.
