LAST week's first ever high fives netball tournament for primary schools in the Okehampton area has been declared a resounding success, with more than 100 youngsters taking part.

Twelve schools attended the event at Okehampton College last Wednesday, with the 118 pupils and members of staff taking part in a coaching sessions during the morning, followed by the tournament in the afternoon.

The eventual winner was the team from South Tawton Primary School, which received a trophy to keep — all the players at the tournament received certificates.

Wendy Raymond, event organiser, said she was delighted with the success of the day.

She said: 'I was pessimistic at first that I'd get 12 schools to bring teams but I was very impressed. It's nice they all came and enjoyed it — it was fun.'

High fives is a simple form of netball, aimed at primary school children, in which teams of five play on a rotating basis.

Wendy said: 'The idea is to get them to play in all positions. They start to learn the concept so that when they get to secondary school they can adapt easily to the seven-a-side game.'

This year's tournament was sponsored by West Devon Borough Council — but Wendy said she hoped it could become an annual event if a sponsor can be found to help with funding.

A workshop to coach teachers in the sport is also planned for September.
