TAVISTOCK Visitor Information Centre will be moving back to its original home this summer in the heart of the town.

The visitor information point will re-locate back to the historic Court Gate building in Bedford Square and will be the focal point for tourists and local residents who need information on where to go and what to see in Tavistock.

Organised and managed by the Tavistock Heritage Trust, the visitor’s information point (VIP) — which has been based in the nearby Post Office for a few years — is hoped will help with tourism in the town and guide people to local businesses and groups.

But to help the VIP flourish, volunteers are sought to run the centre.

Geri Parlby, trustee at the Tavistock Heritage Trust, said the former centre in Court Gate had been closed for a few years but hoped that the new and improved VIP setting would be a place ‘where tourists and local people can go for any information on the town’.

‘The only way we can open the VIP is if it is volunteer manned. It’s an intricate part of the town and we want people in the community to work with us to get it up and running so that it is ideally open seven days a week.

‘We will train volunteers and we hope the volunteers will engage with Tavistock Heritage projects around the town.

‘We would love volunteers of all ages — and mainly people who are passionate about Tavistock and its history and heritage.

‘The plan is to make the VIP a major community project.’

Volunteers will be the first point of contact for heritage and visitor information for Tavistock and the surrounding areas.

The VIP will hold information on UNESCO partners in line with being the gateway destination through to Cornwall.

The VIP will deliver visitor information over the counter, email, website and telephone and will be established as a commercial entity and provide revenue generating activities from attraction ticket sales, retail, advertising/sponsorship from local businesses, donations and Heritage Walking Tours.

The trust also hopes that the VIP will open five to six days a week with an aim to open seven days if demand requires, from between 10am to 4pm.
