Newquay Hornets 22
Tavistock 0
TAVISTOCK'S poor run in the league continued on Saturday when they were well beaten by a Newquay side whom they genuinely believed were there for the taking after a fine performance in defeat at home to Kingsbridge the week before.
Tavistock dominated possession throughout the first half and despite this were unable to convert their superiority into points. The Tavistock forwards although winning lots of ball employed one dimensional driving game and when they did release the ball it was often slow allowing the Newquay defence to be formed up and waiting. For their part the Tavistock backs, when they did get the ball seemed to be strangers to one another, with ball being spilled or wrong options taken.
Tavistock may argue that they were missing a few influential players and the loss of the inspirational Duncan Law just before half time was also a blow but the team seemed to be outclassed by Newquay who were quicker in both thought and deed.
Newquay opened the scoring after 15 minutes when they took a quick penalty whilst Tavistock were slowly getting their defence organised and speedy full back Dan Pearce scored in the corner. Tavistock did have chances of their own the best of which was scorned when Will Brown and Dan Luffman fluffed an opportunity on the wide left. The visitors lost Duncan Law just before half time with a back injury and immediately conceded a try scored by Newquay right wing Matt Cross. Scrum half Sam Cullen added the conversion for a 12-0 half time lead.
The second half continued much as the first with Tavistock winning possession but unable to convert their possession of the ball into points. Newquay scored a further converted try mid way through the half via fly half Chevy Read with Cullen adding the conversion. With two minutes remaining Tavistock were penalised under their own posts and Cullen finished off the scoring with a penalty.
