THE annual St Stephen's Shield Cross country competition took place at Okehampton last month. Years seven, eight, nine and senior boys and girls took part. Once again a large number of students from Tavistock College competed against a number of other schools from the surrounding area. This was a very challenging event with a course containing steep inclines throughout a wooded area. Even though this was the case, the team performed with distinction with some outstanding individual performances. Special recognition should go to Claire Fraser, Nick Champion, Dan Crawford and Sarah Palmer, who all won their specific races. Nick Champion and Dan Crawford both won their races by over 30 seconds, which is a great achievement. The day got better when in the year seven girls' race Claire Fraser beat off a valiant effort by Sarah Hornby in a close finish to win the race with the third place some 50 seconds behind the pair. The whole team were a credit to the college and the results are as follows: Year seven boys: 2, Dan Quick; 3, Ryan Moorhead ; 11, Luke Bailey; 12, George Glover; 13, Jordan Eales; 19, Alasdair Gasgoigne.
