TAVISTOCK are one of many leading football clubs in the region who have applied to play in the newly formerd South West Peninsula League, which kicks off in August 2007/8. The team, along with 28 of the 39 eligible clubs from the current Devon and South Western Leagues, are vying for 18 vacancies and promotion to ?step six? of the Pyramid system of the English football league ? Tavistock are currently playing in step seven in the Carlsberg South Western League. The new league?s working party have listed the 29 applicants: from the Carlsberg South Western League: Bodmin Town, Falmouth Town, Launceston, Liskeard Athletic, Newquay, Penryn Athletic, Penzance, Plymouth Argyle, Plymouth Parkway, Porthleven, Saltash United, St Blazey, Tavistock, Torpoint Athletic & Wadebridge Town. Applicants from the Axworthys? Devon League are Alphington, Buckland Athletic, Budleigh Salterton, Crediton United, Cullompton Rangers, Dartmouth, Elburton Villa, Holsworthy, Ivybridge Town, Newton Abbot, Newton Abbot Spurs, Ottery St Mary, Plymstock United and Vospers Oak Villa. The successful clubs will be joined by current step six South West sides such as Elmore and Clyst Rovers. The ten clubs that have not applied for step six are guaranteed a place in either of the new division one, east or west. Philip Hiscox, the league?s committee secretary, told the Times: ?The fact that 15 have applied from the South Western League and 14 from the Devon League proves that this is equally popular in both counties. ?Clubs must either have in place the ground standards for step six or seek dispensation based on a business plan of planning permission and funding packages. ?Although there are no guarantees, since Tavistock AFC is already floodlit I think it has a very good chance of entering the new league, especially if it finishes in the top half of its league.? Tavistock, along with the other clubs, will be inspected by officers from both leagues during this month. Inspections will be made in conformity of the new ?FA Ground Standard for Step Six?.
