North Tawton 25

Callington 22

CAPTAIN Neil Peters led his side into the new season in the first round of rugby?s Tetley Vase competition.

It turned out to be a great game of rugby, with both sides hitting highs and lows in the space of the 80 minutes.

Callington, from Cornwall division 2, took an early lead with a try in the corner and North Tawton were rocked. But they came back strongly when the forwards won a good ruck ball and some good handling in the backs saw Simon Fear on the wing cross the line under the post.

This left ever reliable Joe Fewings to slot the conversion.

A scrum collapsed and there was an unfortunate injury to a Callington forward, who was taken to hospital and the game was delayed.

The game stuttered for a while, but a Joe Fewings penalty put the home side 10-5 in the lead at half-time.

Richard Huxtable, at No 8, got a good break from a loose scrum under the posts, but failed to touch down. From the resulting ruck centre Eddie Daw got an unconverted try.

With some well worked tries from Callington and the only reply from North Tawton another Joe Fewings penalty, the visitors took the lead at 22-18.

With all to play for, North Tawton stepped up a gear and with the whole side pressing hard a scrum near the line saw outside half Joe Fewings flip the ball to wing Simon Fear to score another try. Again Fewings converted, to win the match in the last five minutes.

A good win for North Tawton who face Plymouth Civil Service in the next round, to be played on September 20..

On Saturday 13th North Tawton kick off in the league. It is also sponsors? day, everyone is welcome to enjoy a day of hospitality at the clubhouse, so come on down.
