TAVISTOCK Area Support Services (TASS) is looking for volunteers to spend a couple of hours each week enriching the life of an elderly person.

After a successful pilot project of its new befriending service, TASS is looking to increase its original team of six volunteers, starting a six-session training programme in September and hoping to recruit ten to 12 local people.

There are reports of isolated, elderly people dying unnoticed. Often, these people have refused professional help through fear of losing their independence. TASS befrienders help by gaining their client's trust and letting them decide how much support they personally require.

TASS is looking for men and women of all ages, with a wide range of interests and experience.

They may be retired, unemployed, a student, a carer, someone unable to work through disability, a parent with time to spare, or someone who has experienced loneliness and recognises the importance of having another person's company — indeed, anyone prepared to offer time and commitment for a rewarding cause.

Activities can range from merely visiting and spending time with clients, to accompanying them on a walk, swim or TASS outing, to helping them pursue a hobby or interest.

Ann Wilson of TASS says: 'The befriending service is already proving to be an important resource to complement the other services available through TASS. We look forward to being able to extend the service as we recruit more volunteers to help in this vital role.'

Befrienders will be provided with free training, given ongoing support and have all their expenses paid. Each will need to have a Criminal Records Bureau check before beginning their voluntary work. If interested, contact TASS on 01822 616958.
