A TAVISTOCK organisation which transports older people to clubs, activities, hospital appointments and on outings is looking for more volunteer drivers. Each week more than 350 local older people are transported by Tavistock Area Support Services volunteers, either using one of the four wheelchair accessible vehicles or their own private car. Andy Lyle, the general manager of TASS, said: 'We live in one of the most isolated areas in the United Kingdom, with one of the largest elderly populations and we hear how more and more people live in areas that do not have access to public transport, even if they could access it. 'Each week volunteers drive, come rain or shine, making sure people can leave their home and meet up with others, enjoy a trip to the coast or up onto Dartmoor. This year has seen an increase in the number of other voluntary groups and residential homes using our vehicles, which also puts added pressure onto the core of volunteer drivers.' Andy said being able to access the activities made a big difference to people's lives. People often became depressed when they had to give up their cars and they enjoyed being able to visit places again. If you could spare a few hours a week, enjoy driving and would like to make a difference to someone's life please give Andy a call on 01822 616958.
