THE Tamar and Tavy Gig Club had their first competition of the season when they entered two crews for the crews' Rivers Race held annually by Caradon Gig Club at Saltash.
74 crews from all over the South West attended from as far afield as Bristol and Weymouth. The course starts up-river from the Saltash bridges, is then rowed towards the Tavy before turning down river to the Lynher and then back up river again to finish just before the bridges. This challenging course was made all the more difficult strong easterly winds and a fast flowing ebb tide.
The ladies' crew didn't get the best of starts, not finding any clear water but managed to hold their position throughout the race to finish 24th out of a field of 38.
The mens' crew had a better start and well to finish joint 20th from a field of 36. Both crews were pleased with their rows despite the challenging conditions and the lack of 'on water' rowing practise!
The club thank Calstock Gig Club for kindly allowing the club to use their gigs, Zeus and the new Ginsters, for much needed practise while Ginette and Tamar have been in dry dock!
