Okehampton and District Local History Society will hold its next meeting on Wednesday October 12.
Local historian Dr Todd Gray will give a talk on the Great War Memorials in Devon. He has written many books on history in the region and returns having given talks to the group in past meetings.
At their September meeting, secretary Malcolm Francis-Lang gave an interesting talk entitled 'Bullets and Bandsmen'. It was based on a book written by the granddaughter of a soldier in the first world war about his experiences in France, while playing oboe in a military band.
The talk was interspersed with a mixture of humorous and poignant slides of the pen and ink sketches he sent from France, and was followed by video clips from a series of television programmes broadcast about the bandsman.
Meetings of the history society are held on the second Wednesday of each months in the Ockment Centre at 7.30pm.
New members are always welcome and anyone interested should contact Malcolm Francis-Laing on 01837 840158. Non-members can attend meetings at a charge of £2 per person.
