A new Tavistock epilepsy charity is holding a winter dance to raise funds for a specialist nurse in the town. The dance, to be held on Friday, November 9 at Tavistock Town Hall, will include an auction and raffle with prizes, including bookings worth £300 at Cullompton golf course. Other sponsors include Les?s Taxis and Roger Sparling recycling centre. The event is being organised by the newly formed Tavistock branch of Epilepsy Action, set up six months ago after one of its members was diagnosed with the disease. Chairperson Taz Enright said: ?When Alistair Holmes was diagnosed, we discovered that there was no support for epileptics in the Tavistock area. ?There is only one Sapphire Nurse for the entire South West. Sapphire Nurses are specially trained to deal with all the aspects of diagnosis, treatment and care of epilepsy, and our ultimate goal is to get one in Tavistock.? The Sapphire Nurse Scheme was set up in 1995 by Epilepsy Action, the leading nationwide epilepsy charity. Ms Enright said: ?If our committee can raise the initial £5,000, we are hoping that a local surgery will cover the rest. ?By the end of this month, we would like to say we had raised at least £1,800 to £2,000.? Tickets for the dance cost £15 and can be bought at Kingdom House, the town hall, the bus station and Café Liaison.
