READERS at libraries in Tavistock and Okehampton could be enjoying a surprise book this Christmas, thanks to a special scheme organised by staff.

They are inviting regular library customers to take home a mystery book to keep until Christmas Day. The books are being selected by library staff, wrapped up and handed out with customers? normal selections.

They could be racy novels, tales of suspense and intrigue, an old fashioned romance or a sci-fi epic.

Carol Ackroyd, reader development officer, said: ?This is a bit of fun but also one of the ways in which we try to increase the enjoyment of books and reading for all our users.

?It?s a way of introducing readers to an author or a genre they may not normally borrow. Anyone can take part and, for anyone that would like to join, membership is free.

?All people have to do is resist the temptation to peek before December 25.?

She said readers who have been sufficiently inspired by their surprise book can also fill out a review slip, enabling other people to discover new authors.
