THERE is much concern in Tavistock about the proposal to replace the West Bridge toll cottage with a residential block of nine dwellings.
The critics can take heart that the period of 1960s slab architecture is behind us; the architects' drawing indicates an attractive, well-proportioned building. The alternative is a prohibitively costly repair and refurbishment.
They might also recall Allan Bullock's observation when he was Chancellor of Cambridge University and an ultra-modern building was proposed for one of the colleges. He pointed out that in every age the latest style of building was erected and this accounts for the picturesque high streets of many towns.
