WHITE cardboard doves are being handed out by the Okehampton Peace Coalition to help draw attention to a vigil organised for on Saturday February 15.

Ana Pulteney, spokesperson for the group, said many people felt there had been little national debate about the far reaching implications of war in Iraq.

?As part of the local and national events raising awareness of the issues, Okehampton will be joining a number of communities highlighting the Government?s military preparations,? she said.

The vigil will take place in Fore Street, Okehampton, from 10am to 2pm.

?We hope everyone ? including children ? will come along and support us. Silhouettes of doves, as a symbol of peace, will be available. We hope people will take these to display in their own homes.?

There will be an opportunity to sign the Stop The War Coalition petition to be sent to the Prime Minister.

Ms Pulteney said the coalition had approached the local churches, and ministers had read out details of the vigil.

?There is also quite a strong network in the town in that word of mouth works very well in reaching people. I know a lot of people feel frustrated about the situation and in not being able to express themselves.?

Local people wishing to join a coach from Okehampton to attend the rally in London on February 15 can ring (01822) 617630 daytime or (01822) 833934 evenings for details and for bookings.
