A MIX of traditional swing, bebop and dixieland will be raising the roof in Buckland Monachorum this Saturday at the latest fundraising event to improve the village hall..
The Totnes-based jazz group, the Robin Reece Jazzmen who have recently returned from playing at London' Ronnie Scott's Club, are dropping in for a session in aid of the village hall extension appeal.
The village hall committee has been planning the next extension since 1997 and is busily fundraising to raise the last £10,000 needed to complete the work.
Chairman Stephen Fryer said: 'The extension is badly needed because of a lack of storage space within the hall.
'The playgroup currently has to carry all their equipment up and down a flight of stairs every day and the drama group's stage has to be carried right around the hall every time it is used.
'The new extension will also provide better, more comfortable facilities for the OAP drop-in centre.'
All the planning has been done and tenders agreed and the work is scheduled to start on October 2.
'Because we are getting so close to the amount we need and are confident we can raise the funds, we have secured a covering loan to allow us to start building,' said Mr Fryer.
The extension project is costing £76,000 and grants have been received from a variety of sources including the National Lotteries Community Involvement Fund, West Devon Borough Council, Buckland Monachorum Parish Council and Buckland Monachorum Drama Group.
The hall's committee itself has raised over £10,000 towards the project.
Donations to the appeal fund can be made to treasurer R Mabey, Cuxton Meadows, Buckland Monachorum. Cheques should be made payable to Buckland Monachorum Village Hall.
Tickets for the evening are £5.
