THE inaugural Okehampton triathlon hosted by enthusiasts of the fast developing sport took place last Sunday.

Nine athletes lined up to take part in the 300-metre swim at Okehampton pool. Then it was straight onto the bike for a tough 16-mile cycle ride to Whiddon Down and back, finishing with a gruelling three-mile run from Simmons Park up to and past the Army camp to Moorgate and back down to finish at the College.

Fastest to cover the three disciplines was Paul Clark who clocked 1.19.21. Jacky Rice claimed second place with an impressive performance and time of 1.25.40.

Results: P Clark,1.19.21; Jacky Rice,1.25.40; C Hodgson,1.26.37; M Rice,1.29.53; M Holman 1.41.45; B Stevens,1.44.36; S Clifford, 1.44.48; J Winter, 1.56.29;

Organiser Ben Stevens was delighted with the turnout of local athletes given that there had been little prior publicity for the event. He reserved special thanks to the timekeepers and marshalls, without whose assistance the event would not have taken place.

Another triathlon is provisionally planned for September 29 so if you are interested in taking part give Ben a ring on 07789 640526 or keep an eye out for flyers around Okehampton.
