Duchy League premier Lamerton 1 St Stephen's 0 LAMERTON'S last home game of the season saw them end St Stephen's 20 game unbeaten run in the league. In a highly charged encounter, Lamerton were the better side but it took them 85 minutes to spoil Borough's chance to clinch this season's trophy, which was ready to be presented by Duchy league officials had they avoided defeat. St Stephen's only chances were from set pieces. Borough top scorer David Wilkinson was struggling up front against a strong Lamerton defence, with Rob Dicken and Simon Breyley impenetrable at the centre of defence and likewise the central midfield area was dominated by the home team, with Steve Gibbings outstanding. The first half did not have many clear cut chances, Lamerton's shots going straight to the keeper. Andy Wright provided some whipped dead balls for Borough, which Lamerton often struggled to deal with, but it stayed goalless by half time. Lamerton kept up the heat in the second half and as St Stephens tired, chances came thick and fast. Lamerton hit the woodwork three times, once from an excellent left foot curler by Simon Kelly, which would have been a worthy winner. Then with 15 minutes left Rich Searle was fed down the left to run through on the St Stephens goal, but a last ditch tackle saw the ball bobble and the chance was gone. More desperate challenges and the bar kept the ball out. Searle had another chance but somehow his effort was deflected wide. Lamerton, to their credit, kept it going until the end and got a well deserved goal five minutes from time. Searle, again involved, shot against the keeper and Kev Swift was in the right place at the right time to tap home for a jubilant winner.
