Organisers line up before the first course of the South West Emergency Life Support Scheme (SWELLS) last week at Tavistock's Bedford Hotel.

Pictured are British Heart Foundation Devon area organiser Bernie Steed OBE, SWELLS coordinator Nigel Roberts, who is the West Country Ambulance Service area training officer, Tavistock GP Dr Brian Steggles, consultant cardiologist Andrew Marshall and Tavistock BHF branch chairman David Grigg. In front are Tavistock's Lady Mayoress Marjorie Corner and West Devon Mayor Margaret Garton.

The course is designed to help save lives in emergency situations. It provides training in emergency life support to the public in communities which fall outside the eight minute ambulance response area.

The course is free of charge and covers resuscitation techniques and haemorrhage control.

SWELLS was set up as a joint venture between the West Country Ambulance Service and the health authority, it is affiliated to the British Heart Foundation Heartstart Scheme.

More than 5,000 people have already completed the course and the aim is to reach 8,000 by the end of the year.
