THE annual Honey Show of the Okehampton branch of the Devon Beekeepers Association held at Okehampton Show last Thursday attracted 89 entries.
The classes consisted of honey, both liquid and granulated, honeycombs for extraction, beeswax blocks and candles and honey cookery classes.
Entries were judged by Mr H Luxton of Newton Abbot for honey and Mrs Mrs W Quich of Crediton for cookery classes.
The observation hive was of great interest to many visitors who could observe bees as they would be in a normal hive but through a glass covering.
The bees were going about their normal duties of looking after the eggs and brood with a queen who could be seen marked with a white spot.
There were numerous questions asked regarding bees and beekeeping which beekeepers were only too happy to answer.
Prizewinners were: Honey — W Vanstone, M and N Craig and Mr and Mrs West; Honeycombs — R King, T Stevens; Mead — Mrs and Mrs West; Beeswax Candles — Miss M Harris; Beeswax blocks — M and N Craig; Honey fruit cake — Mrs J Berry; Honey sandwich — Mr and Mrs White; Honey biscuits — Mrs J Grist; Honey Shortbread — Mrs C Duffy.
Cup winners were M and N Craig, R King, and Mrs J Grist.
