Devon Colts' Cup, first round

Tavistock Colts 28

Devonport Services' Colts 6

TAVISTOCK had the best possible start — a fabulous kick-off from Josh Sutton found touch 10 yards from the Services' line. Adam James then won their throw, a drive from the forwards and he was over the line. Sutton converted from wide out.

Tavistock won a scrum and David Manning picked up but was tackled just short and sustained a broken arm. Services broke away but a great covering tackle from Richard Lloyd saved a certain try and allowed Simon Beard to clear the ball back into the Services' 22.

David was helped from the pitch, replaced by Hamish Pearse-Danker.

Tavistock continued to press but the Services' defence kept them out and turned defence into attack, Tavistock were penalised and Services converted.

The second half started with Services kicking out on the full. Tavistock took the advantage, forcing Services back but they came storming back and won a penalty which was converted.

Tavistock were forced to defend with Services on all out attack. From a penalty miss, Tavistock secured the ball and set up a drive. The ball was spun out to Duncan Law, a half break, fed back inside to Joe Lane who rampaged through the defence setting the ball back for James McDowell to crash over under the posts. Josh Sutton converted.

Simon Pearce put in a crunching tackle and turned the ball for Darren Sutton to secure and Josh cleared.

Services came back but Mark Ewings put in a great tackle on the left and John Pain drove up-field. Services were awarded a scrum but Peter Welsh won the ball and it was shipped out to Bryn John. A great barn-storming run had defenders bouncing off him. He was eventually brought down just short, but managed to get the ball back and Hamish Pearse-Danker was on hand to swoop it up and dive over. Again Josh converted.

Services tried a short kick-off but Seb Roberts was quickest to react taking the ball, side-stepping the defence and creating the space for Paul Harwood to cruise in under the posts.

Man of the match: James McDowell.

• David Manning has had an operation to have a plate inserted into his arm, and will unfortunately be out for the rest of the season. His team mates wish him well.
