FUNDS left over after the closure of the Limehayes Respite Unit in Okehampton will be used to buy extra days for a day-care scheme in the town.

The fundraising committee of the respite unit met recently to discuss the use of any money left in the bank after all the debts had been settled with Limehayes — that figure was £2,256.

The unit had provided weekend care for disabled children.

In accordance with the committee's constitution, such funds had to be spent on other respite services and as a Saturday day-care scheme was continuing to run in Okehampton, which the users of Limehayes could access, it was decided to buy extra days of care in the summer holidays.

The scheme is called STARS and is run by NCH for Children.

It is hoped the money will buy a further nine days of respite.

Fundraising chairman Sally Dann said: 'We hope that everyone who has helped us will be satisfied with this decision as the users of Limehayes will continue to benefit.

'We would like to thank everybody who so kindly made donations to keep the unit open for three years.'

The unit closed after Social Services ended its contract with the Exeter Community Health Trust.

The long-term aim is to place children with suitable families so they are cared for in a family environment.
