THE first round of the South West Winter Foursomes competition, sponsored this year by Wolferstans Solicitors, was held at Yelverton Golf Club over two Sundays this month. Due to the number of byes to the second round there were only 10 matches played in this round. The biggest surprise was to see Downes Crediton professional Barry Austin, accompanied by his son Dan, go out to Dougie Anderson (Yelverton) and Pete Cooper (Bigbury). The Crediton pair were five up after nine holes, but their opponents played the more difficult back nine very well, to win the match one up. Local pair Seb Treglown and Matt Allan had a close match with Malcolm Hill and Kevin Cornwall (Okehampton) with nothing to separate them until the 19th hole, when the Okehampton pair won the match at the par three. Nicky Gawman and husband George (Tavistock) kept the flag flying for the ladies by beating Neil Sellick and Paul Hendy (Yelverton) on the final green. Laura McNulty, partnered with Tom Edwards (Bigbury) beat another Bigbury pair, Paul Kingwell and Andy Pitcher 2 and 1, but the all female pairing of Jane Wright and Bev Ruth (Staddon and Tavistock) were unable to make the most of their courtesy shots and lost to Duncan Sluman and Martin Budden (China Fleet/Elfordleigh) by 2 and 1. The second round will be played on October 28 when 64 pairs will be competing, including 12 club professionals.
