Cornwall and Devon league Tavistock first XV 22 Newquay Hornets 24 IN the best game of rugby played at Sandy Park this season Newquay ran out the eventual winners to retake the outright top spot at the top of the league and with Cullompton winning Tavistock are now in third place. This was an excellent game with both sides playing at the top of their game and testing each other to the full. Tavistock, whilst beaten, can feel proud of their efforts in outscoring Newquay by three tries to two. Ryan Johns kicked Newquay into an early lead with a penalty goal after Tavistock had been penalised at the breakdown. Tavistock then came back with a driving maul ending just short of the Newquay line. But the pressure paid off as when the ball was released to the backs winger David Goodspeed crossed for a try that Josh Sutton converted. A penalty goal from Sutton for the home side extended the lead to 10 – 3 midway through the half. Tavistock continued to apply the pressure but poor decision making and finishing meant that they were unable to add to their score. They then allowed Newquay back into the game with two further penalties before half time. The crucial part of the game was just after half time. Newquay re-started like a train and scored a try via winger James Ingle. Ryan Johns converted the try and added a penalty on 47 minutes to put Newquay in front 19- 10. Tavistock then responded with the best try of the game. Lawrence Evans initially started the move. He then linked with Duncan Law and Duncan made the line with no small measure of help from back row colleagues Paul Greenhill and Jake Phillips. Josh Sutton converted. The game continued from end to end and Newquay extended their lead with a second try from James Ingle. With time running out Tavistock hit back when they worked centre Doug Lloyd over in the left hand corner. From the restart Tavistock attempted to get the winning score but after three phases of play the final whistle sounded. l This weekend Tavistock do not have a league fixture and they return to action the following weekend when they travel to Falmouth.
