AROUND 150 skaters and supporters gathered in Benson Meadow in Tavistock last weekend, to watch the daring and exciting tricks of young bladers and skaters on the skateramp.

The day-long fundraising event was organised by Richard Porter, Verity Anderson, Richard Gee and other Taviskate members.

Prizes, which were donated by Tidal Wave of Tavistock and Flatspot of Plymouth, were awarded to blader Jay Quinney in the under 13 age group, skater Tom Kirkin from Calstock in the 14-17 age group and skater Gary Corsico of Plymouth in the 18 and over group.

Bob Pilbeam, chairman of Taviskate, said the day had been very successful.

'Participants came from Tavistock and the surrounding areas, showing a skatepark's potential to encourage more visitors to the town and reduce the number of young people using the streets for their sport,' said Mr Pilbeam.

He said the event was attended by the chairman of the town council's properties committee, Cllr Peter Donkin, who was impressed by the relaxed atmosphere created by so many young people watching and taking part.

'Benson Meadows proved its worth as the ideal location for the development of informal teen facilities,' said Mr Pilbeam.

Forthcoming events for skaters in Tavistock include the opening of the new Mary Tavy ramp this Saturday at 3pm, including a barbecue and live music.

A skaters' meeting will be held on October 2, starting at the Wharf car park at 6pm.
