A TAVISTOCK College sixth form student has been named UK Windsurfing Association Windsurfer of the Year after members of the public voted for him ahead of a string of professionals.
Sam Sills, a 16-year-old A level student and Bic Techno U17 world champion, topped the poll and was presented with a trophy at a prize giving dinner in Rutland.
His 13-year-old sister Saskia, also a student at Tavistock College, was named Young Windsurfer of the Year at the same event after winning the Techno 6.8 Girls World Championship.
Sam said: 'Winning is amazing, I wasn't really expecting it. I got a big trophy which was great. All the pros' names are engraved on it, it's pretty cool to think my name's on it too.'
Sam travelled up to the Barnsdale Lodge Hotel not knowing the result of the competition. He was proud to be named the winner and had a great time at the prize giving, dinner and party.
'I gave a speech and thanked everyone,' he said. 'I would like to thank everyone who voted for me and supported me, the organisers of the UK Windsurfing Association and my sponsors Tushingham, Starboard, the Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme and Predict Wind.'
Sam won his first world title in Spain in 2007. All eyes will be on the Sills family when Sam, Saskia and her twin sister Imogen return to Spain in the new year to compete in a regatta.
