SWIMSCHOOL and other members of the Meadowlands swimming pool in Tavistock have raised more than an excellent £600 by swimming 28.5 kilometres in total to raise money for the Wheel Appeal charity. Amelia Watson, aged four, raised the most amount - £90 and paddled 250 metres. Charlie Hoskin, four, and Lucy Vogwill, six, also did very well raising £52 each and managing 225 metres between them. Ian and Janet Penrose, who are regular swimmers at Meadowlands, swam the longest distance of 21.25k between them and raised £45. Everyone who took part received a certificate of thanks and Amelia, Charlie and Lucy will receive a SwimSchool swim bag in appreciation of their efforts. Chris Gallie, the SwimSchool co-ordinator at Meadowlands, said: 'All the SwimSchool children thought it was great fun to see how far they could travel. The serious swimmers swam as far as they could and the tinies used a variety of floats. Everyone enjoyed this challenge so much that we will probably do it again at some time in the future, perhaps in the spring. 'Parklands at Okehampton — our sister centre — hopes to do something similar next term. 'The appeal itself goes on until 2012 and aims to provide new sports wheelchairs, training and coaching that will enable disabled children and young adults to participate and enjoy recreational sport. 'Wheelpower, the national organisation for wheelchair sports is hoping that the Wheel Appeal will provide 400 new sports wheelchairs each year until 2012.'
