MORE than 100 children enjoyed an afternoon of sport and autumn sunshine as they competed in a football/netball tournament held at Kelly College recently.
With the emphasis on friendly competition, teams from Kelly Junior, Tavistock County Primary, Whitchurch, St Andrews in Buckland Monachorum, Princetown and Mary Tavy and Brentor played a series of first-round matches in a bid to qualify for the play-offs.
The girls' netball event provided some closely fought matches and plenty of goals. The final between Kelly Junior and St Andrews brought together two evenly matched teams in an exciting match. Some skilful shooting by Kelly allowed them to clinch victory by 6-3.
The boys' football tournament produced even closer scorelines with little separating the six teams. The final again featured teams from St Andrews and Kelly Junior and resulted in a nail-biting finale.
Even after extra time and penalties the teams could not be separated and it was decided that they should be declared joint winners.
Following the matches the children enjoyed a hot tea and were presented with their trophies from Kelly College Junior headteacher, Richard Jeynes.
Final results — Netball: 1, Kelly Junior; 2, St Andrews; 3, Tavistock Country Primary; 4, Mary Tavy.
