IT has been heartening to see the huge effort which local people have made to raise funds for the victims of the tsunami disaster. Churches, schools, businesses, charities and other voluntary organisations have all responded magnificently. I have always felt that this area has a greater sense of community than almost any other part of the country. We have not for instance seen the decline in voluntary work here which has affected much of the rest of the UK. Now we know that this generosity of spirit extends to the world community too. There are no hearts warmer than Devonian ones. Now we need to make sure that the Government is equally generous. The money which goes to the tsunami victims must be genuinely new money, not resources taken from other deserving aid projects.
