SIXTH form students from Tavistock College will be doing their bit for the environment this month, as they take part in an international programme involving beach cleaning. The college has entered into a partnership with Tavistock Volunteer Centre, in which students from the school will be taking part in a variety of voluntary activities. College principal Colin Eves said: ?This is in line with the college vision, which emphasises the development of students? personal qualities and interests. ?The first project they will be involved with is a beach clean. It?s part of an international scheme whereby volunteers identify sections of beach to clear up and record what they find there. ?All the details are then logged on to a website and are available for research purposes and the process is repeated every few years, so changes can be monitored and information gathered about the amount of rubbish in the sea and the quality of our beaches.? Mr Eves said in the coming months, students would be getting involved in a range of activities on a regular basis ? it is hoped that by doing so, the image of volunteering and attitude towards becoming a volunteer will be raised among young people. Billie Burnett, Tavistock Volunteer Centre co-ordinator, said: ?I am delighted we can help the students at Tavistock College get involved in such a worthwhile and enjoyable volunteering opportunity ? I think it?s exciting for them to be part of such a big programme. ?We are looking at a wide range of things the young people can get involved with in this area, including conservation work, working with sports organisations, opportunities to use IT skills etc. ?It?s terrific to give a bit of time and energy to your community ? and it?s good fun at the same time.?
