STUDENTS from Tavistock College have been experiencing the world of work this week, part of a special drive to expand youngsters? appreciation of employment possibilities on offer in the area. The World of Work event yesterday (Wednesday) saw Year 8 students experiencing the day in cafés, banks, building societies, factories, universities and primary schools ? many of them spending the day with parents. Nicky Davidson, careers co-ordinator at Tavistock College, said: ?We started the initiative last year with a ?take your daughter to work? day but we?ve expanded it this year. ?It?s really to make the students aware of what?s out there, what?s expected at work, the different sort of jobs that go on. ?For example, one student last year desperately wanted to work at a particular place ? and then hated it! It was positive in that she realised it wasn?t at all how she expected it to be.? Nicky said another student spent the day in a factory environment and expected to be bored stiff, but ultimately found the experience interesting and enjoyable. She said: ?We are also wanting the students to find out about personal skills which are needed in the world of work. You could have all the A-levels in the world, but they won?t help you if you can?t speak to the public, for example, in certain jobs. ?Particular skills are required to work with children or animals. It?s making them aware that jobs are about more than qualifications.?
