STUDENTS from Kelly College recently attended a special event to collect prestigious engineering awards.

The Engineering Education Scheme is run by the Education Development Trust (EDT) which encourages students to show industrial enterprise, creativity and innovation.

It links teams of four Year 12 students and their teacher with local companies to work on real scientific, engineering and technological problems.

The Kelly College team — Edward Blackwell, Harry Coulton, Peter Meachin and Michael Parlby — spent six months working with Ginsters on a challenging engineering project, to find ways of redesigning the metal pasty moulds to help cut down on waste.

During their six-month project phase, the students were encouraged to show industrial enterprise, creativity and innovation while gaining extensive experience of problem-solving, teamwork and project management.

At the awards ceremony held at Plymouth University, the team had to deliver a presentation to the panel of experts drawn from South West companies.

In their talk, the students described the obstacles they faced and how they were solved. The team then went on to face more demanding questions from the judges while manning their display stand (pictured above).

This is the first year that the EES has been competitive and the Kelly Team beat off tough competition from schools across Devon to win the cup.
