A FORMER Tavistock College student is to perform in the final of the BBC Radio 3 Choir of the Year 2010 competition.

Ruth Douglas and her fellow singers from the University Central Lancashire Chamber Choir won the adult category of the competition, which searches for the UK's best amateur choir. The choir's entries can be heard on BBC Radio 3 at 6pm this Sunday.

Ruth, a second year music theatre student at UCLan, developed a passion and skill for music at Tavistock College, where she was involved in a number of musical productions, including 'Jack the Ripper'. Ruth was also a key member of the college's Gospel Choir.

Ruth's stepmother, Rebecca Douglas, said: 'We're all really, really proud of Ruth. The whole family is behind her — we all travelled up for the category final, with some members of the family even flying in from Northern Ireland. You don't think you'll get caught up in all the excitement, but we're absolutely ecstatic for her and can't wait for the final.'

The auditions for the competition took place in February, and saw more than 150 choirs and 6,000 singers competing for a place in the category finals.

The final round of the competition, presented by broadcaster Aled Jones, takes place at the Royal Festival Hall on Sunday, November 28.
