AMONG the 5,000 who started the Plymouth Half Marathon were 19 members of Tavistock Athletic Club.

TAC stalwart Steve Groombridge was first home for the club in a time of 1 hour 23 mins. 55 secs and earned him first place in his age group. Tim Brooks followed in 1.28.33, with Pete Bazley third home in 1.33.27, Roger Hewitt, coming back from a long layoff through injury, fourth in 1.44.33. Trevor Williams, came second in the M65 category in- 1.47.19.

First lady home was Eunice Moule in 1.57.03, and among the ladies there were several doing their first half marathon — Sara Bury, Sarah Aspen and Beth Pocknell, with Sara and Beth running their first race in club colours. It was also John Bills and Judith Ames first half for the club.

All acquitted themselves well and said that their training with the club had meant they had exceeded their expectations. Jane Carroll who knocked 26 minutes off her time of last year.

Apart from Steve Groombridge and Trevor Williams, four other members finished in the first 20 of their age group.

Tim Brooks was 11th, Pete Bazley seventh, Roger Hewitt 10th and Sarah Aspen's daughter, Laura, who was fifth U20s lady. As far as the club knows this is the first occasion when a mother and daughter have run a Half together for the club.

The club caters for road and off road runners of all standards who want to improve. Novices are welcome.
