AUCTIONEERS at Tavistock Livestock Centre reported another excellent entry of 178 cattle and 358 sheep for their December fair and last season sale of suckled calves.
All classes of livestock met a strong trade throughout.
The sale commenced with breeding cattle topping at £1,100 for a six year old Aberdeen Angus bull from K Watson, Postbridge. Other prices included £840 for a three year old Devon bull from C Constable, Bere Alston.
Store cattle sold to £998 for a 12 month old Limousin x steer from R Paine, Plymouth selling eight 12/18 month old steers with an average of £943.50.
Heifers topped at £990 for a 26 month old Limousin x from the same vendor selling five 17/26 month old heifers averaging £956. Other notable prices include £972 for a 24 month old South Devon x heifer from K J Watson, Postbridge; £900 for a 12 month old South Devon x steer from J and S Eggins, Yelverton; £898 for four 12/13 month old Simmental x steers from J H Vanstone, Tavistock; £875 for two 20/21 month old British Blue x steers from K Calender, Milton Abbot and £808 for three 13 month old South Devon x steers from J and S Eggins, Yelverton.
Suckled calves sold to £782 for six eight month old South Devon steers from G Goddard, Yelverton selling 11 steers averaging £739.27; £730 for two five month old Charolais x steers from R P Alford, Milton Abbot selling 22 steers averaging £688.90; £650 for a nine month old Charolais x bull calf from Taviton Farms, Tavistock; £620 for four six/seven month old South Devon x steers from E J Doidge and Son, Whitchurch and £592 for two five/six month old Charolais x heifers from R P Alford, Milton Abbot.
In the sheep section store lambs sold to £78 per head for a pen of seven ram lambs from Tamar Farms LLP, Lamerton; £75.20 for a pen of 12 mixed store lambs from the same vendor, selling 101 lambs in total averaging £68.63 a head; £66.00 for a pen of two ram lambs from G W, J W and S R Dingle, Tavistock; £58.50 for a pen of seven store lambs from R Blake, Horrabridge; £58 for a pen of 12 store lambs from E Fox, Mary Tavy, a pen of nine store lambs from R and R R Hill, Shaugh Prior and for a pen of eight mixed store lambs from R Glanville, Milton Abbot.
Grazing ewes topped at £61.50 for a pen of nine ewes from E Fox, Mary Tavy.
The Christmas poultry sale will take place tomorrow (Friday) at 11am.
