South West Peninsula League Throgmorton Cup Tavistock AFC 3 Exeter University 1 TAVISTOCK battled through to the final of the inaugural at Newton Abbot on Wednesday night with a hard fought victory over Exeter University. Missing a number of regular players through injury and suspension the Lambs started the game in less than convincing fashion and were immediately forced onto the back foot. The students showed much more verve against a nervy Tavistock and appeared a yard quicker all over the pitch. It was no surprise therefore when Exeter took the lead after ten minutes — a break down the right led to a good cross, which was directed into his own net by Luke McPherson at the back post. The students continued to dominate with Tavistock failing to come to terms with their movement off the ball and their lead could easily have been doubled. Tavistock were thrown a lifeline just before the interval when a speculative freekick by Lee Coxon was allowed to creep into the net. The second period was an all together different affair. Tavistock pushed forward as a unit and Will Stringer began to influence the game much more. However the real catalyst to success was Glyn Hobbs. His skill and strength were too much for an increasingly beleaguered students' defence and he was unlucky not to score with a sublime chip which came back off an upright. However, not deterred by this, minutes later the same player took possession 30 yards from goal and moved forward before unleashing a stunning drive past a helpless keeper. Tavistock were now in control but they allowed the university team back into the game and goalkeeper Andy Meeds had to make a great stop to preserve their lead. However, this was to be Glyn Hobbs' night and a break through the middle saw Mark Conday cleverly link up with Hobbs with a deft back heel which resulted in the ball nestling in the back of the net. Tavistock played out the rest of the game to take their place in the final against Bodmin Town on Monday, May 5, at Torpoint, 3pm kick off. Club physio Dave Chanter said: 'This result will certainly be a fillip for the club in what has been another disappointing season in the league and it is hoped that success can help to stimulate better things for next season.'
