MAY I add my voice to those who have been expressing their anger and astonishment at West Devon Borough Council?s proposal to ?yellow-line? this ? currently ? very pleasant town. The reasons given for this outrage are dishonest in my opinion, as there is not a safety hazard in our present arrangement. The increase in the number of cars parked in the streets is the fault of the council itself, trying to squeeze more money out of already well-enough-taxed citizens by charging for our car park, but offering absolutely no extra service in return, and then wondering why we have all decided not to use it! They can?t have made a penny, so now in pique they threaten us with banning street parking altogether . . . it?s really rather childish! The safety issue is absolutely bogus, as there hasn?t been a fatal accident that I can remember in the town limits in the 30 years that I have lived here, so how is the present arrangement dangerous? The one good spin-off from on-street parking in narrow roads like ours is that you just cannot speed ? beats speed-bumps any day! The vast majority of car shoppers only park in the road for a few minutes, then move off. I realise that this Government want to control every aspect of our lives these days, but ?if it ain?t broke, don?t try to mend it?. Jerome Twomey Elmfield House Hatherleigh
